Body modification
I am in the process of having a dental implant for a missing tooth. It’s quite a heavy–duty procedure, involving a titanium pillar being implanted into the jawbone and purely for cosmetic reasons. Basically, I was talked into it by the dentist, having happily wandered about for the last 15 years looking like Chris Benoit without being especially traumatised by that. It makes me think about the difference between body modification better to resemble the “norm”, as opposed to body modification better to defy that norm. What’s the difference between having a titanium pillar hammered into your gum so that you can look more like the guy from the Colgate advert, versus having a titanium pillar through your tongue so you can look more like Marilyn Manson? Just society’s prejudices? What about another “unnecessary”, potentially dangerous surgical procedure: who would consider having LASIK eye treatment or a similar operation?
