The Quiet Dance
Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion at The Place last night.
It wasn’t as quiet as all that, actually. Cool work. It had a strong rhythmical, musical element (despite the fact that there wasn’t any music), using different groupings of movement, with the main theme being 8s. Use of repetition. Interesting use of vocalisation from the performers as the main sound element, which also contributed to the occasional nice touches of comedy. Like the last Burrows/Fargion work I went to (Both Sitting Duet), the piece was at times evocative of the creative/rehearsal process, rather than being overly ‘performed’. Again, the different movement feel of Burrows and Fargion — Burrows the quicker and ‘dancier’ of the two, Fargion more straightforward — worked well, as did the inter–relation between the two on stage. By way of footnotes, Burrows has started sporting a goatee since the last time I saw him, which suits him. The piece was around three quarters of a hour long, which I thought was just about spot–on.
