Booze

A recently publicised study about increasing deaths in this country from liver cirrhosis is interesting to me primarily because the statistics it provides indicate that you are still pretty unlikely to die of the disease during the period aged 15 — 44 (14.1 deaths per year per 100,000 of male population in 2001). What with all the hysteria about binge drinking lately, I was starting to wonder if I drank too much. But I’d be extremely surprised if I made it into the top 4,000–odd biggest male drinkers in the country in any given year.

Comments:
I didn't realise there was a league table. Or is it more like a squash ladder?

"Squash" presumably being conspicuous by its absence from the fluid intakes of those towards the top end...?

Have been refining my thinking on this a bit more. I think a league would be a better indicator of performance in the long term on the basis that you would be awarded points for each week's intake and therefore consistent boozing would be rewarded (eg Speedo circa 1997), whereas a "ladder" arrangement would mean that a sporadic boozer could progress up the table by catching a legendary boozer on an off-day (eg Speedo in Estonia). The giant killing qualities of this might make it a more entertaining spectator event (sponsorship from Sky etc.).

Great work!
