There's been a problem with the ftp for this which has meant I couldn't post. Nor was posting on the forum possible. This should now be resolved. Chrish has been provided with a new login because he wants to post something on the forum - this login should now work OK.

Just been looking at the stylesheet switcher on alistapart. I've been switching stylesheets from standard to pink on here by resetting a cookie and then reloading the page. Turns out there's a better way. It was a cool idea when I first put it on tho'. By the way, anyone tell me (Geoff?), how it looks on a mac? For PC, it looks alright in IE5, better in 5.5 than 5.01. Looks fine in Netscape 6. Looks wrong in Opera. I suspect it'll look wrong in IE5 for mac in the same way it looks wrong in Opera. It's hard to fix that and keep using the page definitions I'm using. Yargh.

Back to bikes The first incarnation of this site used to be mainly about bikes. Here's the contents of an email I just sent those of my friends who also have bikes.
"An eventful 12 hours on the bike. On the way home from work last night, in the dark, wet, slippery roads, heavy traffic. Nipping along doing 35-40 or so in the left hand lane on Leman Street to continue straight on rather than turn right onto Prescot with the queue of traffic. Dick-head decides he wants out of the queue, wrenches the wheel and floors the pedal. So close to losing it; - both wheels locked, sliding sideways into the gutter decelerating from 40 to 20 mph before coming off the brakes and back on the power to nip through the rapidly closing gap that was left between the car and the kerb. I really thought I was going down on this one! Then, riding to work this morning down Commercial Street, again in heavy traffic - overtaking a practically stationary queue. Got pulled by the cops for going on the wrong side of the road around a traffic island - didn't spot them until it was too late. Fortunately the officer was a good bloke, checked my tax (11 01 ... phew!), informed me that I could get three points for this offence and asked for my excuse. I played the "I know I shouldn't do it, but it was stationary traffic, sorry" card. He then played the comedy "well, I'm getting old and senile these days, I'm not sure I definitely saw you" card. His colleague (bad cop?) then came over and expressed incredulity that I was not to be given a ticket. The first officer stated that I had received a severe admonishment and would never do it again. I agreed wholeheartedly and got the flock out of there. 10 minutes later I was standing in the middle of City Road to prevent the bloke lying there prone having been knocked off his Vespa being hit by another car before the ambulance came".6 miles, one day, three incidents : that's life commuting on a motorcycle in London. In the end I wasn't hurt and I don't think the bloke on the Vespa was too badly damaged (although the same cannot be said for his suit - a lesson I learned myself last February). So the moral of the story is: not all coppers are bastards, keep your eyes open and wear your leathers.

I'm in Pizza Express with Jim, Helen, Chrish and April.
I am in the pub with Ed and Chrish showing them the fabulous WAP phone.
Hey, that reminds me - anyone want to see some pictures of April and Sus dancing around on Phil's photography site (only one of them taken by me - on the new digital camera).
What's new? I had a week from hell last week - loads of really urgent, but not especially interesting stuff that required me to be in the office until the early hours most days. Things picked up on Friday when I had my birthday celebration in honour of my 27th - cocktails and sushi, and a humidor containing 25 assorted Havana cigars from my friends. All in all, I was spoiled rotten and loved it. Then a long weekend in Brussels eating enormous meals of moules frites, oysters, lobsters, mountains of chips, steaks and drinking loads of beer. Belgian beer is excellent, but it all starts at about 8 percent alcohol. Stella, known in England as "French fighting lager" (incorrectly, Stella being brewed in Leuven, Belgium) or "the Wifebeater" is regarded as a soft drink in Belgium and is available from vending machines on station platforms. Great stuff tho'. The hotel was cool - the Astoria on Rue Royale - a really old-school 4 star with loads of nice touches - reminded me of the Paris Ritz on the odd occasion - all part of an all inclusive lastminute.com deal with the Eurostar. So thanks to April for organising it and being the ideal companion for the trip and to Sharky for showing us around while we were out there. The visit also gave me a chance to play with my new toy - a digital camera - maybe I'll put some stuff on here if the pictures turn out alright.
This post is from my new cellphone!
